In the picture above you can see the Third millennium cross on the left, in the city on the other side of the bay. On Monday we walked to it. It took a little over 2 hours. The city is very cool and a bit unsettling. It is incredibly hilly and there are very old dilapidated buildings. I would have loved to have taken more pictures of Coquimbo but i didn’t feel very comfortable taking my camera out.
This is a close up of the cross, way bigger up close than we were expecting (93 meters or 28 floors). It was built in 1999 to celebrate Jesus’s 2000 birthday and is the largest christen monument in South America. There’s actually an elevator in the center of it taking you up to the two arms of the cross which is where we took the following pictures.
The white thing in the center of this picture is the Stadium in coquimbo.
After visiting the cross as we were looking for a colectivo or taxi and we walked passed a young couple, I guess we gave them a good impression because before we knew it they were in their car offering to show us Coquimbo. Although language was a bit of a struggle we went with Richard and Alisiave to the old Coquimbo Fort that used to ward off pirates! They were incredibly kind and had even planed to show us a really nice beach close by but unfortunately we ran out of time as traffic was very bad and they had to pick up there son from school.
